US senate renews ban on plastic firearms

The US senate has approved a 10-year extension of a ban on plastic firearms that can evade metal detectors and X-ray machines.

The US senate has voted to renew a 25-year-old ban on plastic guns, sending the measure to President Barack Obama, who is expected to sign it.

The House of Representatives passed the bill, which extends the ban for 10 years, on December 3.

It is the third extension of the Undetectable Firearms Act and passed just ahead of the expiration midnight on Monday of a previous renewal.

The measure outlaws guns that can slip undetected through metal detectors and X-ray machines at secured facilities such as airports and other transportation hubs, government buildings and schools.

Some senators attempted unsuccessfully to include in the bill a ban on plastic guns manufactured using 3-D printers.

Currently, guns printed on such devices can be made legally by including a small metal part, which can easily be removed.
