US stocks rise ahead of economic data

Five minutes into trade on Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 60.91 (0.38 per cent) to 16,164.21.

US stocks have opened higher ahead of a busy week of economic data and retail sector earnings reports.

The broad-based S&P 500 added 7.47 (0.41 per cent) at 1,843.72, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 17.31 (0.41 per cent) to 4,280.72.

Monday's calendar was quiet, but the next few days will see several major data points, including the Conference Board's index of US consumer confidence and the second estimate of fourth-quarter economic growth.

In corporate earnings news, several leading retailers report results this week, including Home Depot, Macy's and Best Buy.
