A multicultural performance has been used at Melbourne's Federation Square to raise awareness about violence experienced by women.

Members of the crowd were encouraged to participate in dance as a sign of support for women's rights.

Co-organiser of the One Billion Rising event Tamar Spatz says engaging communities through dance is a way of opening up dialogue on violence against women.

She spoke with Thisanka Siripala.
