Five-time V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup has signed a one-year contract extension with Triple Eight Race Engineering.

The short-term deal will keep the 31-year-old at the team until at the end of 2015 - the same year teammate Craig Lowndes' contract expires and Red Bull's sponsorship is due for renewal.

That leaves the door open for Whincup to consider a move to a rival outfit or even overseas from 2016.

Whincup has claimed all five V8 titles and four Bathurst 1000 victories with the Brisbane-based outfit since joining them in 2005.

"I'm really happy to be staying with the family," he said in a statement confirming the agreement on Tuesday.

"The category is in really good shape and is moving forward well, so I'm really excited to confirm that I'll continue to be a part of it for at least another couple of years."

Whincup is chasing a record sixth championship this season with a new engineer in David Cauchi, who replaced Mark Dutton after he was promoted to team manager.

The 2014 series begins in Adelaide this weekend with the Clipsal 500.
