V8s in hunt for new manufacturers

They've lured Nissan, Mercedes and Volvo and V8 Supercars chief officer James Warburton is on the hunt for new manufacturers to join the championship.

V8 Supercars' search for new manufacturers to join their championship will continue with chief executive James Warburton poised to hold several meetings over the next few weeks.

Nissan, Mercedes and Volvo have all joined the Australian motorsport championship in the past 18 months, joining traditional rivals Holden and Ford.

Speculation is rife a sixth manufacturer is poised to join the championship for next season with Toyota and Chrysler repeatedly linked to V8s in the past.

A V8 Supercars spokesman confirmed Warburton would meet several manufacturers in coming weeks, those currently in the championship and those outside it.

A key aspect of discussions will be the future of the championship as well as gauging how interested other manufacturers are in joining the competition.

"We'll be doing an update to all manufacturers, reaching out over the course of the next month with where we're heading, what we're about and what the evolution is," Warburton told the Speedcafe.com motorsport website.

"We're really just opening the lines of communication and talking to them all and assisting the teams where we can."

The separate meetings with individual manufacturers is a change from last year when a one-off manufacturers' forum was held midway through the season.

Speculation of the future of Ford and Holden in the sport is likely to dominate talks with those two brands.

Ford have committed themselves to the championship until 2016 though it's unknown what their involvement will be once Australian manufacturing operations cease in 2017.

It is also believed Holden's contracts with the championship-winning Red Bull Racing and Holden Racing Team outfits will end at the completion of this year's season.

It's understood negotiations with Holden and those teams are ongoing and an announcement on the future commitment by the manufacturer is imminent.
