Van fleeing police crashes into Syd dam

A man has been forced from the middle of a dam in a stand-off with police after his van plunged into water in Sydney's west.

Police have been confronted with a watery stand-off when a man refused to get out of a dam after crashing a stolen van into the water in Sydney's west.

Police were investigating reports of a man attempting to steal a bobcat in Orchard Hills in the early hours of Tuesday when a white van crashed through a fence and plunged into a dam.

The driver then swam to the middle of the weed-covered dam and refused to get out.

Police drew their guns after the man threatened them and he eventually left the water.

He was arrested and is being questioned over the stolen van.

A second man was also arrested nearby for unrelated offences.
