A woman has died after being hit by a van in front of horrified relatives on a Sydney road.

Police say the 62-year-old woman was crossing Polding Street in Fairfield, in Sydney's west, with two relatives on Saturday night.

The woman stopped in the middle of the road before trying to run to the southern kerb but a van struck her.

The woman died in hospital shortly after.

The van driver, a 52-year-old man, was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

Police say investigations into the collision are continuing.
