Voters in Venezuela have been almost evenly split between support for the successor of the late President Hugo Chavez and opposition Leader Henrique Capriles.
Former Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro has been declared the winner of Venezuela's election, after taking just over 50 per cent of the more than 14 million votes.
But the opposition is disputing his victory, claiming there were voting irregularities, and calling on supporters to protest against the result.
Dr Anthea McCarthy-Jones, an international relations professor at the University of Canberra, spoke with David Crisante about how the election outcome is affecting Venezuela.
