Australia's Daniel Ricciardo briefly hit the wall during the final practice session for the Formula One Grand Prix on Saturday.

The Red Bull driver finished the session in sixth on the timesheets, while his teammate Max Verstappen was the fastest on the track, just ahead of championship rivals Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.

While Verstappen finished fastest, it was not a session without drama for Red Bull.

Ricciardo brushed the barrier on the exit of turn 10 before Verstappen limped back to the pits in the closing moments with an apparent gearbox problem.

The Dutchman clocked 1 minute 41.829 seconds on the 5.065-kilometre Marina Bay Circuit.

But the four-time race winner Vettel was less than a tenth behind in his Ferrari with 1:41.901.

Mercedes' Hamilton followed another fraction behind on 1:41.971 which will boost his morale ahead of qualifying later in the day.

Hamilton leads the championship, three points ahead of Vettel, top for the first time in the season after winning in Italy two weeks ago.

McLaren impressed with Fernando Alonso in fourth and Stoffel Vandoorne fifth.
