Carlton utility Dennis Armfield will extend his AFL career into a tenth season after agreeing to a one-year deal with the Blues.

The 140-game veteran will also take up a part-time role as a specialist skills coach with Carlton's women's team.

In an indication of the extent of coach Brendon Bolton's list overhaul only three players - Kade Simpson (264), Marc Murphy (214) and Bryce Gibbs (209) - will have played more games than Armfield when the 2017 season gets underway.

"Carlton means so much to me, I've been here for nearly ten years and there is a really good feeling at the club," Armfield said.

"We're a developing side and I am passionate about teaching our younger players and hopefully having a positive influence on them.

"The body is feeling good and I still feel I have a fair bit to offer in terms of my playing career, so I am thankful the club has given me this opportunity to go around again.

"To also explore my passion for coaching through a part-time role with our women's team is a terrific opportunity.

"I think these talented female footballers have so much to offer and I can't wait to play a small role in this exciting new competition."

The 29-year-old was the 46th player selected at the 2007 draft and made his debut against Geelong in round 10 of the 2008 season.
