Outgoing Governor-General Peter Cosgrove has chosen a charity that supports veterans to receive a donation in honour of his service.

The $10,000 donation, which is a gift from the Australian government, is going to Soldier On.

"Every veteran knows that it is not just how we distinguish ourselves in service that counts, it also matters how we look after each other when that service ends," Sir Peter said.

"Serving as Governor-General has been the honour of a lifetime and while I most certainly did not expect a farewell gift, I am pleased that the Australian government's generous contribution will support Soldier On."

The organisation's acting chief executive Tony Fraser said Sir Peter has long been concerned with veterans and their welfare and that the money will go to good use.

"Now more than ever Soldier On are in need of support and funding to continue our programs in over nine locations around Australia," he said.

Sir Peter's own military service included Vietnam and East Timor and he has been both Australia's chief of army and chief of the defence force.

He is stepping down as Governor-General on Sunday, with former NSW governor David Hurley taking his place.
