New Veterans' Affairs Minister Stuart Robert wants to reduce the time veterans' wait to claim their entitlements.

Mr Robert, a former army officer and the first veteran to hold the veterans' affairs portfolio since 1983, said improvements could be made.

"If they need services, the services are there, it's pro-active and timely. We need to get claim times down and make sure we're addressing modern contemporary veteran needs," he told ABC television.
