Veterans to be given compensation guidance

Veterans and their families will be offered help navigating compensation claims through the findings of a new study.

A major new study is aiming to help veterans and their families navigate an often complex web of compensation claims and appeals.

The federal government-backed study, which follows a Senate inquiry into suicide by veterans, will be overseen by the former head of a task force into Defence abuse.

The study headed by Robert Cornall will canvass the views of younger veterans, female ex-soldiers, their families and ex-service organisations in coming months.

Researchers will scrutinise advocacy services in other countries, as well as models used in other areas, such as the legal, community and disability sectors.

"Veterans and their families deserve to have easy access to the best services available to them and this study has been established to ensure that happens," Veterans Affairs Minister Darren Chester said on Monday.

Readers seeking support and information about suicide prevention can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
