Vettori still in World Cup cricket frame

NZ Cricket selection head Bruce Edgar says former skipper Danial Vettori has made it clear he wants to return to the Black Caps.

Former Black Caps skipper Dan Vettori remains in the frame for next year's cricket World Cup.

Vettori's name was missing when a 20-strong list of players to be offered New Zealand Cricket (NZC) contracts for 2014-15 was released on Thursday.

As with last year, the experienced left-arm spinner opted not to be considered for a contract.

But national selection general manager Bruce Edgar says Vettori has made it clear he wants to return to the Black Caps, subject to fitness and form.

"He's working pretty hard," Edgar said.

"I hear he's pretty fit. It's just a matter of form and we would look seriously at him if we know he's available."

The Black Caps have one-day series at home against South Africa, Sri Lanka and Pakistan before the World Cup.

Vettori, who will be 36 at the time of the tournament in February and March, has played 275 one-day internationals, but injuries have meant the last one was more than a year ago.

He had his first match in five months last weekend in the MCC bicentenary fixture at Lord's and will play for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Twenty20 Caribbean Premier League, which starts this weekend.

Also absent from the contract list were pace bowler Doug Bracewell and batsman Jesse Ryder.

In April, NZC said the pair had "yet to satisfy the selectors that they have their off-field issues under control".

Edgar said Bracewell had been working extremely hard since he received that message.

"He's doing everything right as far as we are concerned at the moment."

Edgar said Ryder was considered for selection earlier this year.

"At the time, we decided that his preparation wasn't up to the standard that we required," he said.

"To this stage, it's still the same. It doesn't discount him from selection at some future point."

Edgar said selection was not just about players' talent and skill.

"It's about what they bring to the team as well, so it's the all-round package that we're getting."
