Vic ALP calls for Holden support package

The opposition has called on the Victorian government to use its auto industry roundtable to come up with a package to support Holden workers.

The Victorian government must use its auto industry roundtable to come up with a package to support Holden workers, the opposition says.

Labor employment spokesman Tim Pallas said manufacturing skills needed to be retained and the government had to outline a jobs plan for the sector.

"We've heard nothing more about what this government will do in order to preserve and retain the skills associated within our vehicle industry," Mr Pallas said on Tuesday.

"What we would demand is the premier come out with a package that would assist these workers stay in the industry, retain their skills and apply their skills both for their families' wellbeing and, of course, for the state's."

Premier Denis Napthine will on Wednesday hold a roundtable with key automotive industry players.

Dr Napthine has promised Holden workers he will get the best deal for them, but he also expects General Motors to introduce systems to assist workers in reskilling and seeking new job opportunities.

He has also sought "substantial" assistance from the federal government, which is due to this week release a package to find auto workers new jobs and support businesses affected by Holden's 2017 production shutdown.

"We need substantial assistance from the federal government to assist directly those workers, but also to assist to grow jobs and opportunities across the Victorian economy," Dr Napthine said last week.
