Vic baby girl killed by sitter, court told

A 10-month-old baby girl who died of head injuries was happy and healthy when dropped off at a babysitter's house, a Melbourne court has been told.

A Melbourne babysitter inflicted a series of fatal wounds upon a 10-month-old girl, a court has heard.

Chloe Murphy died of serious head injuries in December 2010, two days after she had been left at babysitter Ketapat Jenkins' Kensington home.

Prosecutors told the Victorian Supreme Court that Jenkins deliberately injured the girl sometime during the several hours when the child was in her care.

Bruce Walmsley SC said Chloe's parents, Anthony and Phurithee Murphy, had suffered every parent's worst nightmare because of Jenkins.

"She inflicted a series of wounds upon the 10-month-old victim that led to her death," he told the court on Monday.

Jenkins, 30, has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

Mr Walmsley said Chloe was in good health when she was dropped off at Jenkins' home.

"She was perfectly well, acting happily, acting normally," he said.

However, Mr Walmsley said when the Murphys returned, Chloe was lying limp and unresponsive in Jenkins' arms and struggling to breathe.

Chloe was rushed to the Royal Children's Hospital and underwent emergency surgery, but died two days later.

Mr Walmsley said Jenkins gave a number of different accounts about her actions that night, and tried to suggest that the Murphys had mistreated their child.

At one stage Jenkins told friends that Chloe had suffered an epileptic fit, Mr Walmsley said.

Mr Walmsley conceded that the Murphys had fought with each other in the past, and that Ms Murphy once threw a stroller at their car while Chloe was strapped in on the back seat.

Defence barrister Peter Morrissey SC will deliver his opening address on Tuesday.
