A former heroin addict who was jailed for murdering his girlfriend's baby has failed in a bid to appeal his conviction.

Melbourne man Paul Ta-Vuong, 32, is serving a 25 year jail term for killing Silas Leithhead in May 2013 while the boy's mother was out buying drugs.

Ta-Vuong put Silas to bed after his mother returned to their Richmond flat, and the boy was found dead about four hours later.

During a trial before the Victorian Supreme Court, lawyers for Ta-Vuong argued the death was accidental.

Ta-Vuong told a police officer he had tripped over a bath mat while carrying Silas and the little boy hit his head.

A post-mortem found Silas suffered major fractures to his skull, fatal brain injuries, liver damage and extensive bruising.

A jury found him guilty of murder.

Following Ta-Vuong's conviction, his lawyers filed an application for leave to appeal on the grounds the jury's verdict was unreasonable and could not be supported by the evidence.

The Court of Appeal on Wednesday denied the application.
