Vic barber accused of murder denied bail

A Melbourne barber has been refused bail after being accused of stabbing his 68-year-old neighbour to death.

A Melbourne barber allegedly murdered his neighbour about half an hour after the victim smashed his shop window with a rock, a court has heard.

Tony Papadimitriou, 35, is accused of stabbing 68-year-old Donato Galgano near his barber shop in Preston after ongoing disputes between the pair.

Mr Galgano told a triple-zero operator that Papadimitriou was "crazy" before the stabbing on July 10, the Victorian Supreme Court has heard.

Papadimitriou was refused bail by Justice Betty King on Thursday.

Justice King said the case against him was strong and he had not proven exceptional circumstances warranting bail.

The court heard Papadimitriou and Mr Galgano, who police have previously said were neighbours, had applied for intervention orders against each other.

But there were "various interactions" between them on the day of the fatal dispute, Detective Senior Constable Miranda Stubbs told the court.

There was evidence Mr Galgano threw rocks at Papadimitriou's barber shop window.

Det Sen Const Stubbs said a witness saw Papadimitriou crossing the road toward Mr Galgano.

The alleged altercation wasn't captured on CCTV, but there were no other people around Mr Galgano at the time, she said.

Footage showed Papadimitriou then heading toward his home, while Mr Galgano walked slowly away in the opposite direction.

Mr Galgano, who appeared to have a mental health issue, collapsed about half an hour after throwing the rocks, the court heard.

Two knives were seized and were being tested by police, one from Mr Galgano's pocket and one from Papadimitriou's bedroom.

Papadimitriou, who maintained to police he did not stab Mr Galgano, is due to front court again in October.
