Students, parents and staff at Luke Batty's school are struggling to comprehend how an 11-year-old boy could be murdered at cricket practice.

Luke was a grade-six student at Flinders Christian Community College in Tyabb. He was also in the local scout group.

"Flinders is devastated by the sudden and untimely death of one of our Tyabb Junior School students," a school statement said.

"Our school community is in shock and struggling to come to terms with these tragic circumstances.

"Our prayers and support are extended to the boy's mother and we thank the members of the community who have rallied to support her."
Principal Jill Healey said staff are discussing how to help students cope.

The school has brought in extra counsellors and chaplains and has briefed parents, students and staff.

"We are continuing the day now as normal as we possibly can," she said.

Scouts Victoria says the scouting community is also shocked and saddened.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends," it said in a statement.
