Vic driver charged over minibus deaths

A man who crashed head-on into a minibus and killed two elderly women in Victoria has been charged with two counts of culpable driving.

A disqualified Melbourne driver allegedly high on ice in a stolen car was on his way to put flowers on his brother's grave when he drove head-on into a minibus of dementia patients, killing two.

Michael Patrick Trueman, 23, appeared in an out-of-sessions court hearing and told the bail judge he was driving to a cemetery to mark the anniversary of his brother's death.

"I never meant to hurt anybody or do anything wrong," a tearful Trueman said on Friday night.

He was charged with two counts of culpable driving, two counts of dangerous driving causing death and one count each of theft, reckless conduct endangering life and driving while disqualified.

The crash in Rosebud in Melbourne's southeast on Wednesday morning left an 88-year-old woman dead at the scene. A 91-year-old woman died in hospital on Thursday.

Several other patients were injured.

Police allege Trueman stole the car in Coburg and was seen driving erratically minutes before the collision.

A drug test after the crash allegedly came back positive for ice.

The Coburg man was taken to the Dandenong hospital after the crash, where he stayed until he was able to appear in court.

He was remanded to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday.
