A 19-year-old man has been taken to hospital with life threatening injuries after he lost control of his ute and hit a metal fence.

A driver is fighting for life after being impaled by a metal fence in northwest Victoria.

Police believe the driver lost control in the Bendigo suburb of Long Gully and hit a median strip and metal fence, which went through the front of the ute and impaled him just before 1am (AEDT).

The 19-year-old was taken to Bendigo Hospital with life threatening injuries.
