A knife fight has left one man dead and another in a serious but stable condition in a Melbourne hospital.

Police found a 26-year-old man dead and a 66-year-old with stab wounds after a fight at a Fairfield house on Thursday night.

The two men are known to each other and a Royal Melbourne Hospital spokeswoman said the older man remains in a serious but stable condition.
