Vic fire levy cut for farmers, businesses

The Victorian fire services property levy will be cut in 2014/15, with farmers and rural businesses most likely to benefit.

Victorian farmers and rural businesses are the winners after the state government slashed the fire services levy.

The opposition says the cut is evidence that too much money has been collected from Victorians.

Treasurer Michael O'Brien said the 2014/15 fire services property levy rates would be reduced for all properties.

The levy, used to fund Victoria's firefighting services, was introduced in 2013 to replace a levy collected by insurance companies.

Shadow treasurer Tim Pallas said the government had raised too much money from the levy, collecting $23 million more than expected in last year's budget.

Mr O'Brien said rural businesses would pay about $100 a year less than in 2013/14, while farmers would pay about $47 a year less.

He said homeowners in metropolitan areas would pay $143 a year, the same as they paid in 2013/14.

Homeowners in rural areas will pay $142, also unchanged.
