Vic fire refuge won't open, opposition say

A fire refuge promised by the government in Kinglake won't open in time for the fire season, the Victorian opposition says.

Plans to build a fire refuge have been scrapped as the summer fire season approaches, the Victorian opposition says.

Documents obtained under Freedom of Information (FOI) by the opposition reveal a fifth site in Melbourne was planned but will not go ahead.

The refuge at Kinglake was recommended by the Fire Services Commissioner as part of the community fire refuges pilot program in 2012/13.

Opposition spokeswoman for Emergency Services and Bushfire Response, Jacinta Allan says the government has missed its own deadlines as to when the four fire refuges will open.

"There are many questions Denis Napthine and his government are refusing to answer, leaving high fire risk communities in the dark on the eve of another dangerous fire season," Ms Allan said.

Four fire refuges in East Warburton, Ferny Creek, Blackwood and Millgrove were suppossed to be ready by the start of this year, she said.
