Vic firefighters bill to be debated, again

The Victorian government's second attempt to split the state's paid and volunteer fire services is due to be debated in parliament.

A second attempt to overhaul Victoria's firefighting agencies is due for debate in parliament.

The proposed change would abolish the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and join it with career Country Fire Authority stations to form Fire Rescue Victoria.

The new proposal, which would make the CFA a volunteer-only agency, was re-introduced to parliament last week and is expected to be debated and voted on in the lower house this week.

The bill is relatively unchanged since it was spectacularly scuttled in the upper house last year when two Liberal MPs used religious reasons to skip parliament on Good Friday, but staged a last-minute return to help vote down the law.

Presumptive cancer compensation rights for firefighters are included in the same bill.

The compensation scheme will be administered through WorkSafe and be backdated to June 1, 2016, for eligible firefighters.

It will pass the lower house easily with the government's large majority, but the government needs three crossbenchers to support it in the upper house.

If passed, the new model is expected to come into effect by mid-2020.
