The future of federal government subsidies for kindergarten will be at the centre of discussions at a meeting of education ministers today with the Victorian government vowing to push back on federal cuts.

Victoria's Early Childhood Education minister on Friday announced she would push newly-appointed federal Education Minister Dan Tehan to recommit to the funding when ministers meet at the Education Council in Adelaide.

Victoria's Labor government currently funds 10 hours of kindergarten per week per child, while the federal government under the Liberal-National coalition funds five hours, as part of a national partnership agreement.

The federal funding is set to end on 30 June 2020, as per the government's budget strategy announced in May.

"Scott Morrison needs to get on board with funding, or else Victorian families will be left with a choice of going back to just 10 hours a week or having to pay more for this vital childhood education," Jenny Mikakos said.
