A grassfire that was threatening homes in Victoria's northwest has been brought under control.

Firefighters battled dangerous conditions as they tried to stop the fast moving, out of control grassfire that affected the communities of Mystic Park, Lake Charm and Kangaroo Lake.

Earlier on Monday, these communities were told it was too late to leave and the safest option was to take shelter indoors immediately.

The Country Fire Authority said residents were no longer under threat and local roads and the train line were being reopened.

Smoke might be visible from nearby communities and roads. The public should stay informed and monitor conditions, it said.
