The Victorian Greens have snatched a lower house seat from the Liberals in what is a first for the minor party.
Greens candidate Sam Hibbins beat Prahran incumbent Clem Newton-Brown on Tuesday night, handing the party a historic second seat in Victoria's parliament.
Mr Hibbins put his victory down to a grassroots campaign and a platform of restoring trust to politics, improving public transport, and action on climate change.
"That's why we won Prahran. We went out there, we listened to the voters and put forward a good case for change," Mr Hibbins told reporters on Wednesday.
Mr Hibbins won the state's smallest electorate by a margin of 262 votes, pending a recount on Wednesday, in a dramatic turnaround after a battle that appeared to be between the Liberals and Labor.
Mr Hibbins believes the Greens were "always in with a shot".
"It's the first time we've ever defeated the Liberal Party in a lower house contest," he said.
Mr Hibbins said he would hold the Labor government to account on its promise to build a local high school.
"They'll know what will happen if they go back on their word - they'll lose more seats to the Greens," he said.
The Greens already have three upper house MPs and expect to win another two.
Mr Hibbins joins the new Greens MP for Melbourne, Ellen Sandell, who beat Labor's Jennifer Kanis.
Prahran has switched between Liberal and Labor for the past 18 years.
Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber said Labor's desertion of the environment led to more Greens votes.
"They were last seen running in the other direction when environment policy was mentioned, and yet that's led to an increased representation for the Greens in parliament."
The state election was on November 29.
