Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital will be forced to answer questions over the way it dealt with claims a volunteer sexually abused a young patient.
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has announced a public hearing starting in Sydney on May 6 will scrutinised the way the hospital dealt with allegations that a young patient was sexually abused by a volunteer in the 1980s.
The volunteer has since died.
Royal Children's Hospital chief executive Christine Kilpatrick says despite the allegations, the hospital is a safe place for children.
"There will be evidence that will be difficult and challenging to hear, however it is central to the process of making stronger institutions across Australia," she said in a statement on Thursday.
"No matter how long ago it occurred, child abuse is abhorrent and goes against everything we stand for."
The hearings will also examine experiences of people who made complaints to the NSW Care Complaints Commission and the NSW Medical Board against medical practitioners.
One of the complaints comes from an outpatient who alleges child sexual abuse by a psychologist at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Northern Sydney in the late 1960s.
