Vic inquiry spotlight on recycling crisis

The illegal storage of toxic waste that led to fires in Melbourne will be a focus of the first hearing in state parliament's recycling and waste inquiry.

The illegal storage of chemical and industrial waste that led to several toxic fires across Melbourne will be a focus during the first day of public hearings in a recycling parliamentary inquiry.

Victorian parliament's environment and planning committee has already received more than 200 submissions to its recycling and waste management inquiry and public hearings start on Friday.

Future public hearings will look at broader issues relating to recycling and waste management.

Friday's hearing will start with evidence from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and the Environment Protection Authority, followed by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, chief health officer and Hume council.
