Vic Labor to make bad power companies pay

Victorian energy companies would be named and shamed and face increased fines for breaking consumer laws under a Labor government.

Energy companies that change customer contracts without consent could face fines up to $20,000.

Victorian Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews says power companies that systematically break the law will be named and shamed on top of the fines.

Mr Andrews says one energy company changed its entire customer base from quarterly to monthly billing without obtaining consent, while 200 people had wrongful disconnections.

He says Labor will double wrongful disconnection compensation paid by energy companies, from $250 to $500, for every day a customer was without power.

Mr Andrews says the Essential Services Commission will also get more power to crack down on power companies who break consumer laws.

"No Victorian household should be wrongfully disconnected from their gas or electricity supply," he said.

But state Treasurer Michael O'Brien said the government had already asked the Essential Services Commission to look into the matter, and said Labor was playing catch-up.

"The Labor Party was responsible for the smart metre cost blow out and they're responsible for the Carbon Tax," Mr O'Brien said.

"If Labor wants to start naming and shaming people responsible for higher power prices, they should start with themselves," he said.
