About 6000 more patients a year would get health treatment in the comfort of their home under a $175 million election pitch by the Victorian opposition.
Rather than lengthy stays in hospital, the Liberal-Nationals coalition is promising the money to expand home and community care for people needing treatment for chronic disease, infection control and cancer.
Opposition health spokeswoman Mary Wooldridge on Friday said the policy was developed in consultation with hospitals, service providers and patients.
"The most critical thing is to make sure this is a clinical decision in relation to who can get treatment in the home and who has to get treatment in a hospital," she told reporters.
While it gives patients more treatment options, it would also "take some pressure off the hospitals so that very acute patients who don't have alternative options can get access instead of often waiting for hours in emergency departments" she added.
