Vic man acquitted of shooting partner

A man who shot his partner of four years in a Melbourne street has been found not guilty of her murder.

A man captured on camera shooting his partner dead in a Melbourne street has walked free from court.

Phillip Paul Bracken, 46, was found not guilty of murdering his de facto Helen Curtis, 58, in West Footscray in November 2012.

A Victorian Supreme Court jury also found him not guilty of the alternative charges of defensive homicide and manslaughter.

Bracken repeatedly shot Ms Curtis after intervening in an argument between her and his father, Michael Bracken.

Footage of the shooting was captured on a neighbour's CCTV camera.

Bracken, of West Footscray, pleaded not guilty to murdering Ms Curtis, his partner of four years, claiming he shot her in self-defence.

After he was acquitted on Friday afternoon, Bracken was released on bail on a charge of possessing an unregistered firearm.

His lawyers will seek to have the charge dropped.

He sobbed in the dock as the jury read out their verdicts.
