Vic man dies, trees toppled in wild winds

A man has died in a wall collapse and the SES has responded to 174 calls for help as strong winds sweep across Victoria.

A builder died after a brick wall fell on him, trees toppled onto roads and buildings were damaged as strong winds sweep across Victoria.

A partially-built brick wall of a garage in Brighton East fell and killed a 30-year-old Tooradin man during the windy weather.

The State Emergency Service responded to 174 calls for help across the state on Monday and is warning the windy conditions are expected to continue on Tuesday morning.

Most SES calls were for fallen trees and occurred in metropolitan Melbourne, with wind gusts reaching peaks of 91km/h at Tullamarine Airport about 2.30am.

The highest wind gust recorded was 128km/h at Mt William, near the Grampians in the state's south west, just after midnight, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

As the colder air moved through the state later on Monday, there was rain in parts of Melbourne and hail and thunderstorms in Shepparton.

While Monday's highest winds struck as most Victorians slept, Tuesday's high winds are expected to reach Melbourne about 7am.

SES spokesman Stefan Delatovic advised drivers to consider leaving home earlier and driving with the conditions in mind.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Gary Missen said cold and wet weather would continue throughout the week and should deliver at least half a metre of snow to mountains in both Victoria and NSW.
