Vic man wanted to spread child porn: court

A Melbourne computer repairman has fronted court for spreading child pornography on social media and via a fake survey.

A Melbourne computer repairman has been accused of being on a mission to spread child pornography far and wide when he shared links to a virus that downloaded graphic images.

Kenneth Palliser, 62, posed as an attractive young woman online and befriended high school boys on Facebook before bombarding three of them with graphic images.

He also shared links to a virus that mimicked a myki public transport survey, but downloaded child porn images if clicked on, his trial was told in April.

Prosecutor Colin Mandy says Palliser, of Mitcham, wanted to "infect" people with explicit images, some which depicted sexual penetration.

"Mr Palliser in 2010 ... was a man on a mission. And that mission was to spread child pornography as far and wide as possible," he told Palliser's plea hearing in the Victorian County Court on Tuesday.

Mr Mandy said Palliser's offending was capable of affecting many more people.

Palliser was on the sex offenders register at the time.

He had been handed a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to taking hundreds of child pornography images to Victorian shopping centres in 2006 and hiding them in shelves, books, Christmas cards and other products.

Defence barrister Michael Gleeson on Tuesday conceded Palliser would spend time behind bars for his latest offending.

He said Palliser lived a blameless life before 2006 and was respected for his "work ability and ethic" in his computer business.

It was hard to say if Palliser was remorseful, because he continued to deny guilt, but there were prospects for rehabilitation and Palliser was open to treatment, Mr Gleeson said on Tuesday.

A jury in May found Palliser guilty of seven charges stemming from the 2010 scam, but acquitted him on one count of knowingly possessing child pornography.

Palliser's fake myki survey included the company logo and appeared to be endorsed by then-Premier John Brumby, his trial heard.

He has also pleaded guilty to failing to disclose several email addresses to police, as required by the sex offenders register.

Palliser will be sentenced by Judge Gabriele Cannon on September 8 for what she has labelled "bizarre" behaviour.
