Vic mother pleads guilty to infanticide

A Melbourne mother due to face trial over the death of her baby has pleaded guilty to the crime of infanticide.

A mother charged with child homicide after a baby's body was found on a Melbourne footpath last year has pleaded guilty to infanticide.

The woman, who cannot be named, entered the plea in the Victorian Supreme Court on Wednesday before her scheduled trial, and will return to court for a plea hearing next month.

Infanticide is an offence which applies when a mother kills her infant within two years of birth and the balance of her mind is disturbed. It carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment.
