Vic murder accused too unwell for court

A lawyer for a Melbourne man charged with murder over the 2005 death of a two-year-old girl was too unwell to face court, his lawyer said.

A Melbourne man accused of murdering a two-year-old girl 10 years ago was too unwell to face court on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old South Yarra man was charged with one count of murder, one count of manslaughter and two counts of intentionally causing serious injury over the death of the child in Footscray.

Court documents allege the injuries were inflicted on the toddler on either May 12 or May 13, 2005.

A coronial inquest in 2013 revealed she had been unwell and unable to walk, before she stopped breathing at a western suburbs cafe on May 13, 2005.

She was taken to a medical centre but could not be revived.

An autopsy revealed widespread injury to the abdomen consistent with blunt force trauma.

The man's lawyer told a Melbourne Magistrates Court filing hearing on Wednesday he was not well and needed to be seen by a mental health nurse.

He was remanded and will return to court on August 6.
