A Victorian man jailed for 20 years after a pub brawl ended in murder has had his bid to reduce his sentence knocked back by the Victorian Court of Appeal.

Samuel Morrison, 31, was convicted over the fatal 2013 stabbing of Dylan McCowan after a tit-for-tat dispute sparked by an assault in an Orbost pub ended in the father of one's death.

Morrison sought to have his sentence reduced on the grounds the judge did not give enough weight to mitigating factors, including that Morrison sustained a significant injury during his fight with McCowan, but the Court of Appeal denied his application.
