Vic parly committee suspends taxi probe

A Victorian parliamentary investigation into a scuffle between taxi protesters and independent MP Geoff Shaw has been suspended until charges are resolved.

An investigation by the Victorian parliament's privileges committee into a scuffle between protesting taxi drivers and independent MP Geoff Shaw has been suspended.

Mr Shaw asked the powerful privileges committee to investigate the scuffle which took place on the steps of parliament in October last year.

Last month police announced they had charged four people on summons with assault.

The committee said on Thursday that it would suspend its investigation while the matters are before the courts.

The privileges committee has also investigated how a letter it received from Mr Shaw was leaked to the Herald Sun newspaper.

A report tabled in parliament on Thursday said the committee met on November 26 and circulated an email it had received from Mr Shaw.

The following day an article appeared in the Herald Sun quoting extracts from the letter and the full letter was published online.

The committee wrote to Herald Sun editor Damon Johnston asking him to reveal the source, with the editor replying that one of the cornerstones of journalism is that journalists and newspapers do not reveal their sources.

All members of the committee denied being the source of the leak.

The committee was unable to find the source of the leak, but said the leak is likely to constitute a substantial interference with its work.

A further article appeared in the Herald Sun on February 8 that purported to report on the deliberations of the committee.

The committee is also investigating that leak.
