Victorian mother Sharon Siermans went on a single date with Jason John Dinsley before deciding she didn't want to see him again.
Ms Siermans made an excuse to end the January rendezvous early, and later told her friends he was filthy, wore dirty clothes and that she was embarrassed to be seen with him.
Three months later, Dinsley, who was on parole for a 2005 rape, broke into the 29-year-old's home and beat her to death with a cricket bat in a brutal attack that was partially witnessed by her young son.
Prosecutors on Monday called for Dinsley, 30, to be jailed for life.
Crown prosecutor John Champion SC told the Victorian Supreme Court Dinsley became enraged as he walked past Ms Siermans' Ballarat home early on the morning of April 6.
"He was to later describe himself as 'fuming' when he walked past her place and decided he had to do something," Mr Champion said.
He said Dinsley walked to his home in Sebastopol to collect the cricket bat, before returning and breaking into Ms Siermans' home.
Mr Champion said when she confronted him in the kitchen, he repeatedly struck her with the bat, attempted to rape her and beat her to death in her bedroom.
"She was completely defenceless," he said.
At least part of the attack was seen by her four-year-old son, Mr Champion said.
He said Dinsley stole Ms Siermans' phone and left without checking on her condition.
Dinsley hid the bat and his own blood-stained shoes in bins while walking home, Mr Champion said.
Later that morning, Ms Siermans' son told his grandmother that "there was a big man come last night and he bashed mummy with a baseball bat" and "mummy won't wake up to give me any breakfast".
Ms Siermans' mother Denise said Dinsley had killed a wonderful mother, daughter, sister and aunty.
"She was a devoted mother who spent all of her time nurturing her beloved son," Denise Siermans told the Ballarat court.
"She will also miss out on important milestones in her son's life - his 21st birthday, engagement, marriage and any children he may have.
"She won't see what a wonderful boy and man he will grow up to be."
Dinsley, who has 143 prior convictions, has pleaded guilty to murder, aggravated burglary and attempted rape.
Prosecutor Diana Piekusis said Dinsley should be sentenced to life imprisonment, but said his guilty plea and assistance to police meant a non-parole period should also be set.
Defence lawyer Jon Irwin said Dinsley had committed a "vile crime" and knew he was going to prison "for a very, very long time indeed".
"By his own admissions he's completely lost control," he said.
Mr Irwin said Dinsley's offending was not quite in the same league as Jill Meagher's killer Adrian Ernest Bayley or Steven James Hunter, who killed 22-year-old Sarah Cafferkey last year.
"I'm not saying that my client's conduct is in quite the same league, but it's not far from it," he said.
Mr Irwin said Dinsley's father is serving a jail sentence for a killing, and was involved with the Hells Angels bikie gang.
Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth will sentence Dinsley on Friday afternoon.
