The Victorian minister who used a taxpayer-funded car to chauffeur his dogs between his city and country homes hasn't shown up for work a day after quitting cabinet.
Former corrections minister Steve Herbert resigned from the frontbench on Wednesday and announced he wouldn't contest the 2018 election.
He didn't attend parliament on Thursday a day after admitting the scandal - involving his dogs Patch and Ted - had been a distraction for the Labor government.
Mr Herbert says his driver picked up the dogs without him "once, maybe twice" but admits chauffeur logs don't detail if it happened more often.
Opposition Leader Matthew Guy says the former minister owes Victorians an explanation.
"He still hasn't said how much he's rorted. He still actually hasn't given us a proper figure," Mr Guy told reporters on Thursday.
"He's been equivocating, maybe one, maybe two, well I put it to you it's maybe 30 (trips)."
The opposition is considering moving a motion in the upper house calling on the Victorian ombudsman to investigate.
An independent audit was needed to determine how many times Mr Herbert used his ministerial car to ferry his dogs more than 120 kilometres between his Parkdale and Trentham homes, Mr Guy said.
Mr Herbert paid back $192.80 in petrol costs before he resigned.
A spokesman for Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass says she won't be commenting.
