Premier Daniel Andrews has thrown his support behind making a large public square in central Melbourne a smoke-free zone.
Melbourne City Council is seeking public input on a plan to make City Square, on the corner of Collins and Swanston streets, smoke-free.
"I think that's the right thing to do and I dare say the people who use it, many of them, will be very pleased," Mr Andrews said when asked about the proposal on Friday.
The council admits its plan for City Square is bold, after banning smoking in three CBD laneways.
