A Melbourne teenager has been charged with lighting illegal fireworks on New Year's Eve.

Officers were called to Alexandra Gardens at Southbank on Wednesday night following reports fireworks were being detonated.

Police arrested a 17-year-old Canterbury boy and have charged him with conduct endangering a person and other related offences.

He was bailed to appear in a children's court at a later date.

Meanwhile, two teenagers were injured after illegal fireworks were detonated at Lorne.

The girls were sitting on the beach with friends when the fireworks exploded and burnt them at 11.10pm on Wednesday.

The 15-year-old suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated at Geelong Hospital while her 16-year-old friend was treated at the scene.
