A Melbourne teenager arrested after a woman was sexually assaulted at knifepoint has been taken into custody.

Police officers found the 17-year-old at Tottenham railway station overnight. He was questioned and taken to a correctional facility over an outstanding warrant.

A 31-year-old woman was walking her dog at a reserve in Altona on Wednesday morning when she was allegedly grabbed from behind by someone carrying a knife and wearing a bandanna.

He tried to drag her into nearby bushes and escaped when a passing cyclist disturbed him.

Police expect to charge the teenager at a later date.
