Vic to fight hard for schools: Napthine

Victoria will fight hard to make sure the federal government doesn't back away from promised schools funding, says Premier Denis Napthine.

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine says he fought hard for a school funding deal with federal Labor and won't be backing down under a federal coalition.

Education Minister Christopher Pyne sparked outrage when he announced the Gonski funding and reform package set up by Labor would only apply next year and a new scheme would be negotiated for 2015.

Dr Napthine says it took months to get the best deal for Victoria before the state signed up earlier this year and he'll make sure the coalition doesn't back away from education promises.

"We fought and fought and we won. We're not going to give that up," he told reporters on Thursday.

"We'll do everything we can to make sure the coalition government honours that commitment to our schools in Victoria."

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said it's truly scary to think Victorians will have to rely on the premier to secure a new funding deal.

"Denis Napthine is a Liberal first and a Victorian second," he said.

"Victorian kids are entitled to the Gonski money and for Christopher Pyne and Tony Abbott to do anything other than provide every single dollar under that agreement would be a betrayal of trust."
