The man acquitted of the murder of Jaidyn Leskie says it is his fault the Victorian toddler was killed.
Greg Domaszewicz says he left the 14-month-old boy sleeping at Moe in June 1997 to pick up Jaidyn's mother Bilynda Williams, his girlfriend at the time, from a pub in nearby Traralgon.
He says he should never have left the child alone.
"Its upsetting, still, because ultimately there's a kid that died because of my stupidity," he told the Herald Sun on Saturday.
"Ultimately, it was my fault. I was the one who got in the car and went to pick her up."
When he returned, the child had gone, his windows were smashed and a bloodied pig's head was lying on the front lawn.
Jaidyn's body was discovered at the nearby Blue Rock Dam on New Year's Day 1998.
Mr Domaszewicz was charged with his murder but acquitted by a Supreme Court jury.
A coronial inquest in 2005 found Mr Domaszewicz had contributed to Jaidyn's death because he failed to adequately look after the toddler while he was in his care, and also that he dumped the boy's body in the dam.
Mr Domaszewicz said he was not concerned about being charged again, following changes to the state's double jeopardy laws.
"There's a lot more evidence going away from me than towards me," he said.
