Melbourne commuters will find out on Wednesday when tram and train stoppages will begin.

Tram staff on Tuesday joined their train counterparts in approving industrial action as part of four-month pay dispute with Yarra Trams.

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union said 99.4 per cent of tram members voted in favour of workplace stoppages of up to 24 hours and bans on overtime and uniforms.

"Negotiations for a new enterprise agreement started back in April and there has been little progress on our claims," RTBU spokesman Phil Altieri said.

On Monday, the union said train staff would oversee two "free travel days" and have four-hour stoppages as part of their dispute against Metro.

The union's Victorian branch executive will meet on Wednesday to decide when action on the trams and trains will start.

Opposition spokesman for public transport David Hodgett blamed the state Labor government for what he said was chaos in Melbourne with trains, trams and automobiles.

"Yesterday it was trains, today it's trams - all those IOUs that Daniel Andrews wrote to unions before the election are coming home to roost," Mr Hodgett said in a statement on Tuesday.
