Victoria will keep fighting the federal government for the final two years of Gonski funding for its schools.
Premier Denis Napthine says, as far as he's concerned, his state signed a six-year agreement with the commonwealth and they want all the cash.
Victoria signed a deal worth $2.5 billion in federal funds with the previous Labor government.
But the Abbott government has only committed to the first four years. The bulk of the funding was set to come in years five and six.
"We'll continue to pursue the fifth and sixth years in the best interests of students in Victoria," Dr Napthine told reporters in Canberra on Friday, after meeting with Prime Minister Tony Abbott and other state leaders.
"We believe we've signed a six-year agreement and we'll be pursuing that agreement in full."
Education funding will be one of the main issues canvassed in a white paper reviewing the state of Australia's federation.
