Vic woman, 53, survives night in Tas bush

A Melbourne woman has been rescued after spending a night sheltering in a Tasmanian state park.

A middle-aged Melbourne woman has been winched to safety after spending a night lost in the Tasmanian wilderness.

The woman, who sheltered in thick scrub during her ordeal, became separated from her daughter while trekking in the Southwest National Park on Thursday afternoon.

Her daughter and another walker spent hours searching for the 53-year-old but eventually called for help on a satellite phone.

A rescue helicopter was sent to look for the woman but had to turn back because of bad weather.

It went out again at first light on Friday and found the woman about 7.30am, before winching her to safety.

The woman had an emergency beacon with her, and had activated it about three hours earlier.

She was suffering from exposure and fatigue, and has been transported to Hobart with her daughter.
