A Melbourne woman missing for 53 years has been found dead in another state.

After a long investigation, it was discovered that Altona woman Janina Wojcik died interstate in 2010, aged 87.

She was reported missing by her husband in 1963 after she left the family home and never returned.

The original police investigation established that a taxi driver took her from Altona to the Newport railway station, but from there her movements remained a mystery.
